Teeth are one of a rabbit's most characteristic features. Due to the fact that they live in captivity, as pets, they sometimes don't develop naturally. Therefore, we at oneHOWTO will help you find out the answer to your inquiry: how to care for my rabbit's teeth.

Wear

We know that rabbit's teeth, unlike humans or other animals such as cats or dogs, continue to grow throughout their life and are kept the right size through daily wear, e.g. eating. You should make sure that the teeth wear naturally and don't have any sharp angles or points that could injure your rabbit's lips or tongue. Check not only its front teeth, but its peg teeth, which are a set of eleven teeth behind its front teeth.

Make sure your rabbit has a fiber rich diet in order to avoid this from happening, as it can cause the rabbit abscesses and pain. Give it feed it can chew on such as apple tree branches, maple or willow branches so they can wear their teeth correctly.

Growth

In addition, you need to make sure that your rabbit's teeth grow outwards instead on inward towards the gums. If the teeth do grow inwards, it could lead to infection in the mouth and could even obstruct the nasolacrimal duct (tear duct). If this happens, your rabbit's eyes will start to water and tear up. Make sure you take your pet to the vet in order to treat your rabbit accordingly.

Alignment

Another issue that we must control is the proper alignment of the upper and lower teeth. Incisors tend to stick out over their lips. Then, there is a toothless space called a diastema which separate the incisors and the molars. This tooth structure is the same in the upper and lower jaw.

Food

Proper nutrition is an important factor for caring for your rabbit's dental health. Your pet's diet shouldn't be excessively calorific; instead, it should be rich in foods such as hay, alfalfa, vegetables and herbs. Nails

Overgrown nails can actually be dangerous to your rabbit's teeth because, if they accidentally scratch their teeth, they could cause damage to tooth enamel. Therefore, you should trim them regularly.

Other things to take into account

In addition to the care of the rabbit teeth, there are other factors to take into account to ensure that your bunny lives a healthy and bountiful life. You'll find a wealth of information about this in our article on How to look after a pet rabbit.
