First of all let us be clear that the Pit Bull it is not a breed itself, but rather a name given to various different breeds of bulldog as they are long descendants from this breed. There are various different types of Pitbull, which are highly muscular, glossy, medium-size and commanding dog. Despite all the stories concerning alleged dangers, with the proper socialization and care, the different types of pitbulls make great family pets and can be highly sociable animals. A very peculiar breed of Pit Bull, is the American Staffordshire Terrier, it is a combination of breeds such as the Bull Terrier, the English Terrier, the Mastiff, the Bulldog and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier among others. It weighs between 18 and 23 kilograms and can be red, white, black-blue and even brindled. It is a clever dog as well as being loyal and strong, but often it does not get along with other animals.
When comparing it to the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire terriers are taller and weigh more than the latter.
Another common breed of Pit Bull is the American Pit Bull Terrier, their ancestors are Irish and came to America around the 1800s. It was also a dog used for fighting, for bull baiting in England.
It became a very popular breed during the First World War. Other than looking impressive, it is a loyal and brave dog which requires dedication and plenty of socializing with other dogs and humans whilst young.

The term Pit Bull may sometimes also apply to Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and American Bulldogs, as they have several similarities such as the shape of their heads and bodies and all descend from the Bulldog. The fore-mentioned breeds are usually classified in the Bull breed/Mastiff group with the Pit Bulls mentioned above.
