Travel is always a great experience but when it comes to taking a trip out of the city, and your favourite companion is on board, the journey can become a nightmare for them and for you. Not all pets behave in the same way, which is why at OneHowTo we offer some suggestions so you know how to successfully travel with your dog in the car.

Steps to follow:
1

First, bear in mind that they also need equipment, which should include their food, any medication depending on your dog's condition, their bed and favourite toys to make them feel at home and comfortable wherever you go.

2

It's great that your dog may like to travel freely inside the car with their tongue out of the window, but this isn't very safe. You must transport them in a cage that is appropriate for their size and weight for their maximum comfort and protection in case of sudden braking, an accident or a collision.

Although you may frequently drive around with your dog in your car, they will probably only be used to short journeys. So if you've never travelled with them on longer distances, it's advisable to travel in the early hours of the morning and transport your pet on an empty stomach to prevent them from possible nervousness and car sickness resulting in vomiting, to avoid your journey becoming a nightmare.

4

Your dog can go for several hours without eating without a problem. However, it's essential you keep them constantly hydrated, so you must take several water containers to give them throughout the car journey.

You will surely want to reach your destination as soon as possible, but if the route takes over two hours to drive it, you'll need to make one or more stops along the way. In this way, you'll not only stretch your legs but you'll also give your dog a chance to run around a bit and relieve themselves, then you can resume your journey feeling a little more relaxed.

6

If you leave your car for a short time, remember to leave the window open so your pet can breathe. However, remember that you can't leave your dog unattended inside the car for too long, even with the windows open.

7

Keep in mind that if you travel with your dog, it can make your journey a little longer, because you need to meet their needs. However, it doesn't matter how much you're delayed, if you're both comfortable and in good mood throughout the journey.
