Steps to follow:
1

One of the most important things when caring for a Rottweiler and for any pet in general is to keep up to date with vaccines. Bear in mind that annual boosters are needed to keep your animal healthy and free of disease. Take your dog for a check-up at the vet every three months for spot-on treatments or anti-parasitic collars.

Another fundamental guideline in your dog's care is its food. Choose high-quality feed, with a high composition of quality meat. Protein should never be less than 30%, fibre must be equal to or less than 4%, and over 20% should be fat.

2

Another fundamental requirement for looking after a Rottweiler is to brush their fur. Grooming your dog once a week should be enough to get rid of the top layer of shedding hair, there's no need to do it on a daily basis.

With regards to bathing your dog, you should start at a very young age so that it accepts it without any issues. Every 2 or 3 months is a good timescale; however, your dog should also be washed when it is really dirty or if it has flees. Its claws might also need to be trimmed from time to time, otherwise your furry friend might unintentionally scratch you or someone else when it's playing. Always go to a vet to do this as you could risk hurting your pet by accident.

3

Rottweilers have a strong protective instinct towards its family: therefore, when you're training it, avoid leaving it alone with strangers. If your pet feels threatened by a stranger, it could become aggressive.

Let your dog gradually get used to all the people around it, but make sure you are present at first. Rottweilers have an undeserved reputation for aggressive behaviour, and its powerful appearance is associated with a bad temper. This, however, is down to a complete lack of training. It is therefore essential that your dog is socialised from puppyhood to learn how to share with children, animals and other people. It is also important to take the time to help your dog to learn and relate with others positive way.

4

One of the most important factors when caring for a Rottweiler is to take it out for a walk at least 3 times a day, a routine that is vital to the animal's wellbeing. During these walks you should let it run and exercise; Rottweilers are a very active breed and need to use up their energy. If this dog is bored or does not have room to move about, it could develop certain destructive behaviours.

When you are away from home, never let it roam about freely because, given its protective behaviour, it could react negatively to strangers, even if you have dedicated time to socialising it.

5

If you have a Rottweiler as a pet you should know that it is a breed with a susceptibility to health problems such as elbow and hip dysplasia; osteochondritis dissecans that causes arthritis and lameness; Von Willebrand disease; panosteitis; allergies; heart disease, and some swelling. It is therefore important to take your pet for regular check-ups in the vet.

6

Finally, like any pet, when taking care of a Rottweiler, show it plenty of love, attention and spend time playing with it so it enjoys being part of the family. This is an animal that loves cuddles and spending time with his family, something that is essential for its health.
