Cats are wonderful pets, they're very clean and independent but sometimes they can adopt behaviours that are irritating to their owners such as peeing outside of the sandbox , on the furniture and around the house. This behaviour, which occurs mostly in males, is part of their need to mark their territory, but for cat owners this can be a great nuisance. At OneHowTo.com we'll give you some tips about how to prevent your cat from peeing in the house.

Although cats have been domesticated for centuries, much of their instinct causes them to mark their territory to other cats by peeing. The smell of urine, full of pheromones, warns potential rivals of their individual territory. This smell, to us, is very unpleasant, which is why we want our cats to pee only in the litter box.

The best option to prevent male cats from marking their territory, as well as stop their constant desire to stray from home and demonstrate aggressive behavior, is to neuter them. This also controls the reproduction of the species and reduces the number of abandoned cats.

However, to be absolutely sure that neutering the cat will be successful, it should be done before their first heat, thus completely preventing the reoccurrence of this behaviour. For cats that have exceeded the period of their first heat and are older, neutering them can sometimes be effective but not always.

Some experts recommend a more inexpensive option using black pepper and sprinkling it in the areas where the cat pees, helping to prevent it from repeating the habit

Sometimes a cat will pee outside of the sandbox because the litter box is not properly cleaned. Remember that cats are fastidious and if this area isn't completely clean, they'll take care of their business elsewhere.

You must be very patient. Punishing the animal won't solve a problem that's primarily due to instincts, rather than a behaviour of rebellion. If, after trying these recommendations, nothing works, then you should go to your vet for professional advice, as it may be a sign that your cat is sick.
